The Power of Music

So as I’m sitting in the St. Charles Borromeo gymnasium during a weekend youth retreat in my hometown of Sacramento, CA known as Recollections in Christianity I am awestruck. I sit in wonder and think to myself, what makes these youthfuls so unified spiritually strong? And then it hits me! The Music! I am awestruck by the unified sound of the Music! All these gifted spirited youthfuls are either in their teen’s or are young adults and they use music to unify as one. It was almost as if I was viewing a choir of angels rejoicing under one name for one reason, to spread the messages of Love, Kindness and Equality through song and dance. So much passion was present in the way the young musicians strummed on their guitars, keyed their piano’s, and beated on the drums. It seemed as if for one weekend there was no drama. There was no drama between friends, no grudges between parents and their children, no anger no hatred. The music seemed to soothe the souls of the youthfuls, and rightfullly so. Through songs of forgiveness I saw even the toughest of boys shed tears. Through upbeat songs of praise I saw the shyest of people gather together with the rest and clap to the tempo and beat. It is just simply amazing how even just the sound of an instrument can create a community, not the words of a song, but just the sound of it. The power of music, it can unify any group, it can be understood by all, it can change the world. So before criticizing any music, try and understand what it is meant for and what it potentially can create…Unity.
